Tips & tricks for visiting museums & galleries

Issue #9: Nov 30 - Dec 6

Hey there!

  • “I have spent 30 years translating words into images and spaces — transforming texts on a page into kinetic sculptures that encompass viewers with light and song and use magic to later their perspective” — Es Devlin. Read about her retrospective at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum here. The exhibit just opened 2 weeks ago, and looks super cool!

  • The New Museum just announced that Judy Chicago: Herstory and Puppies Puppies (Jade Guanaro Kuriki-Olivo): Nothing New have been extended through March 3, 2024! You still have plenty of time to check out these acclaimed exhibits.

📢 Editor’s Updates

Today, we want to share with you a few tips around visiting museums & galleries!

Museums

💸 Visiting museums in NYC can be expensive, but most have programs in place to make the experience more affordable:

  • Most museums offer free entry on a weekly or monthly basis (double check if reservations are required):

    • Weekly: the Guggenheim on Saturday at 6-8 pm, the Whitney on Friday night at 7-10 pm, the New Museum on Thursdays at 7-9 pm.

    • Monthly: at the MoMA it's the first Friday of the month at 4-8 pm, and Brooklyn Museum on Saturdays at 5-11 pm (though, it's unavailable in December and January).

  • at the Met, students in the tristate area and NY residents can always get in for pay-what-you-wish. Read more cases that’ll get you complimentary admission here.

💳 Memberships for museums you love can very well be worth it. Take for example the Guggenheim membership — it’s $85 a year; if you go >2 in a year, it’s worth it from the admission price alone. It’s even more desirable, if you want to attend member-only events, bring guests, discounts, etc. (not to mention it’s tax-deductible 😛 )

📚 Many museums are committed to fostering education and being a space for community gathering. While we call out interesting talks and events, it’s difficult to cover all available offerings. If you’re planning on visiting a particular museum, it’s absolutely worth checking their events page in case a tour, talk, workshop, or performance is taking place. One consistent example of this is ‘Date Night at the Met’ (Friday & Saturdays from 5-9 pm).

Galleries

💸 Most galleries have the wonderful benefit of being free, given that their typical purpose is to showcase art to sell it.

⏰ Almost all galleries are closed on Sundays. If you want to have a gallery-hopping day, it has to be during business hours or on a Saturday. Pay attention to their hours when planning your visits.

🪩As we’ve noted in the newsletter, galleries frequently have opening receptions. This is a quintessential NY experience — not only are you the first to see the exhibit, but it’s also a great way to meet new people! These are usually complimentary & don’t require advanced sign up.
